Cash in on Your Creativity

As college students with limited time our hands it's very beneficial to learn how to monetize the skills and talents we have naturally. Those of us who are skilled with PhotoShop, artistically inclined or just clever enough to think up some funny or catchy sayings that would go great on a t-shirt, have what it takes to make money online.

Among the best of the many sites where you can go to upload, place, and sell your creations are CafePress and Zazzle. At both sites you can create an account and open your very own shop for free in only a few minutes. You can personalize your shop with a header graphic, brief bio, and etc. You can upload your designs and choose from a wide array of t-shirts, hats, posters, buttons, magnets and more to put them on.

Once you create a product you have the option of adding a title, keywords, and categories to help shoppers find it. Your items will be displayed in your shop and in the marketplace.

The amount of money you make from your Zazzle or CafePress shop will ultimately depend on the amount of traffic you can get to it and the popularity of your products. Zazzle pays a 10% base commission plus an additional 7% when you sign-up as an associate and refer shoppers using your "Zazzle Star" URL. For example, if you create one of their "Basic T-Shirts" (Base Price: $14.95) and set your royalty percentage to the minimum 10%, you will earn $1.50 for every shirt sold. The higher your selected percentage, the higher the price of the item will be. You can control the sale prices of your items but it's best to keep them realistic.

CafePress on the other hand, pays you a markup on top of the base price of every item sold. The amount of this markup is up to you. For example if you create a "Value T-Shirt" (Base Price: $8.99) and decide to add a markup of $2.00, the total price of your shirt will be $10.99 and you will earn $2.00 for every shirt sold.

I've created stores and ordered items with both sites.

Zazzle Store

In my opinion, Zazzle wins. Their product creation process is very simple and easy to use and your products are displayed on real-life models so you get a more realistic view of what the final product will look like. Zazzle is also way better with helping you promote your products. After all you can't make a dime if no one knows you exist. They have flash widgets to place on websites and applications for Facebook and MySpace to help you share your designs with friends. As far as the finished products go, I was definitely more impressed with the quality of those from Zazzle.

Open your Zazzle Store, unleash your creativity, and start making money today!
