For many seniors, life in the real-world is just around the corner. You've probably already begun the interview process searching now for full-time positions rather than internships and wondering where you'll end up at the end of it all. With the sharp downturn we've seen in this economy, it may take a bit more effort on your part to get the job you really want.

According to a recent press release from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, a survey of employers revealed that they plan to hire just 1.3% more of us in 2009 than they did in 2008. NACE executive director, Marilyn Mackes, says "many of this year's graduates will find fewer openings available to them and may have to consider different types of opportunities, industries, and organizations than they planned."

Be aware of these trends and how the state of the economy is impacting them but, be not afraid. While it may be a bit harder to get that first job, it's not impossible. Now is the time to ramp up your preparation. Career advisers suggest taking steps like:

  • Taking additional elective classes in your field of interest.
  • Attending more networking events.
  • Reading as much as you can about your field and companies in it. (There may be great opportunities available with less prestigious names you've never heard of.)
  • Look into industries and sectors that are doing well in the midst of this crisis. (NACE reports that Government agencies have increased their hiring expectations for 2009 by an astounding 19.8%)
  • Check out relevant career profiles in the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. (You may be surprised at all of the options your degree and your field offer)
  • Get friendly with the advisers in your school's career services office.
