If you've had an internship in your field or a computer class specific to your major you are probably already somewhat familiar with various software packages that are popular in your field. If there are none in your curriculum, consider taking a computer-related elective. During internships, be proactive. Politely ask co-workers to show you the software they use and how to use it. As you learn, you'll increase your own knowledge base and become a more productive intern in the process. Another way to find out what technology applies to your field is to check out the website of a professional organization in your field. See Weddle's List of Professional Associations. This will at least give you an idea of what technology is most relevant to you. From there you can search online or at the library.
Not only will your tech savvy look great on your resume and make you a more marketable job candidate, but it will also help you become more efficient in the work you do. Technology saves time and money and by making the most of it you create a win-win situation for you and your future employer.
