Student Discount on Windows 7

by: Sam Henry

Another article, another great student discount. In an earlier article, we reviewed Microsoft's student discount for Microsoft Office Ultimate and compared the software to its free alternatives. We concluded that while there may be a number of quality alternatives to its core, Office is still hands down, number one. Since then Microsoft has launched its latest operating system, Windows 7 and with this launch came another great student discount. College students can download Home or Professional editions of new OS for only $29.99. Our view on Windows 7 is much the same as it is for Office 2007. If you want the latest and greatest, take advantage of this deal while it lasts.

You can get your copy of Windows 7 at the same site you used to get your student discount on Office. Note that this site offers the Professional edition rather than the Home edition. For a typical college student that's a big plus. Professional offers additional features such as location aware printing, remote desktop management, presentation mode and perhaps the most important, XP Mode, which ensures that your Windows XP applications will run with the new system.

An important thing to note about Windows 7 is the hardware requirements. Downloading the file itself can take a few hours depending on your connection and requires 2 GB of space. Microsoft has provided this tool to help you determine if your computer can handle Windows 7. Try it out but know that the student discount for Windows 7 is set to expire on January 3rd, 2010 at 12:00 am CST. Even if the computer you have now can't handle it, it's a good idea to buy it now with the discount just in case you come across another one that can handle it in the future.
